What a pro does

Cleaning a drain properly means finding out what the pipe looks like, not just getting water moving again. A cable pushes a hole through a blockage. It doesn't take the wall of the pipe back to bare material, so a line coated in years of scale and grease will close again on roughly the same schedule. Across the high desert that coating tends to be mineral heavy, since the groundwater carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium and everything that touches it inherits some of that. Water jetting is the tool for a coated line, using pressure to scour the pipe wall instead of boring through the middle. Not every pipe can take it. Old clay, brittle cast iron and some early plastic runs get a camera inspection first, because there's no sense jetting a line that's already cracked. The plumber makes that call from what's on the screen. Where roots or a broken section show up, cleaning stops being the answer and repair becomes the conversation.

A cable is a mechanical tool that breaks up or hooks out an obstruction. Jetting uses water pressure to strip the inside face of the pipe. One reopens the line, the other restores something closer to its original diameter, which matters most in pipes carrying heavy scale or grease.
Not every one. A camera needs an access point and a pipe wide enough to accept the head, so main lines and larger branches are straightforward while a small lavatory arm often isn't. Most properties have a cleanout that gives good access to the sections that matter.
It changes what happens downstream. Plenty of rural New Mexico properties are on septic, and a tank that's full or a saturated leach field will make every drain in the house sluggish while the pipes themselves are perfectly clear. A plumber checks the tank side before assuming the line is blocked.
Sometimes, though a dry trap is the more common cause, particularly in a guest bath or a floor drain that goes months without use. Desert air evaporates a trap seal quickly. If the smell persists after the trap has been refilled, the line is worth a look.
